The Brief
The Soul City Institute was working on a campaign to raise awareness on the dangers of digital human rights violations. This campaign exposes how the internet is weaponised for abuse and is geared towards empowering young people to fight back and be aware of their digital human rights and when and how they’re violated.
The organisation approached me to work and contribute to the campaign by designing a poster or social media design for a Webinar to be hosted on the 10th of December, International Human Rights Day.
The core message of the campaign and poster is this; “The digital world is a new frontier for human rights violations, particularly gender-based violence. But we can reclaim it. The visuals should move from exposing the problem (violation, danger, injustice) to promoting the solution (resistance, safety, empowerment).”
My Approach
The brief asked to make use of a visual metaphor. Something that will be contemporary and visually appealing to a young audience but powerful as a piece of social commentary. After a number of proposed metaphors one that I eventually settled with was that of a birdcage.
